Farewell 2017, and a warm Layabout welcome to 2018!

If you can cast your mind back to the start of the year, who can remember that epic game against New Ash Green 2s at home in January. The ground was frozen in one corner, NAG were in 2nd place and Leigh were at the top after a fantastic run of results in Division 4 West. Whoever won this would surely be in prime place for the champions monicker. And it all came down to that final kick from John Sewell, what a peach!

Ending the season as champions having played 20, won 18, lost only 2, scoring 119 tries to make 752 points scored in total, a 100-5 drubbing of Maidstone and finishing 10 pts clear in the league ahead of late chargers Old Gravesendians, was a magnificent achievement. What a great season, made possible by the loyal support of you all. Thank you!

As we enter 2018, the season so far has been a bit more testing for the Layabouts. Injuries have sidelined key players but new players have arrived at our door and their enthusiasm to learn and be a part of this great club is fantastic. Welcome fellow Layabouts!

And so we call upon your continued support for the remainder of the season in 2018. We are fourth in the league having stuttered in the latter weeks of 2017. We are just over halfway and now face the return fixtures, a chance to even the honours and extend unbeaten runs. As ever we have much planned for 2018, a good run of home and local games, a possible Ladies fixture in the Spring, a members tour to Germany, the usual social events for end of season and during the Summer such as Layabout Golf and more international tickets for the Autumn.

Upcoming Fixtures
06 Jan – Medway 4s (A)
13 Jan – Weavering Warriors (H)
03 Feb – Sittingbourne 2s (H)
17 Feb – Tonbridge Juddians 4s (A)

Thank you again for your support and we look forward to seeing you on the touchline in 2018.

Happy New Year!!!
from the Leigh RFC committee.
